“The Long Take” – The Scene in Cinema Assignment #4 Submission by Cormack Pratt

 

This four-and-a-half minute creative piece covers the history, film-making techniques and dramatic effects of the long take (also known as the continuous take or continuous shot), by both relating the practice to the works of Alred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg and Steve McQueen. and incorporating and explaining cut-masking editing techniques herein referred to as “foreground matching” and “whip pan blurring”.

Note: The video component of this assignment erroneously claimed that Rope was filmed to appear as one continuous shot, despite including four unmasked cuts. The video could not be re-shot, though this error has been fixed in the written component.
