The Right News is a project written, directed and edited by Sienna Curnow, Gab Hills, Ben Harrington, Mitch Reid and Kelly Ghozali.
It utilises satirical content to comment on the ever changing social and political climate of Melbourne and Victoria more broadly as it navigates through the global pandemic. The piece acts as a satirical, sarcastic take on the right-wing media commentary of the leadership choices of Dan Andrews that has given rise to his nickname ‘Dictator Dan’. It addresses the content by combining methods typically seen within the comedy news genre, such as a behind-the-desk anchor, timely and poignant over-the-shoulder and full screen graphics, and parody.
We’ve utilised the technique of a three-act structure – cutting from the anchor, to the parody press conference, back to the anchor – to add variation and different voices to the piece while still remaining on topic. We ended the segment with a call to action, as is typical within the genre, to further signify and flag the majority of this piece as satire. With the aid of a skilled actor, writing, graphics, and editing team, we have produced a comedic, informative segment that sits within the realm of the comedy news genre.
