‘The Brick’ is your weekly sports broadcast bringing you all of the latest world news with analysis from our highly regarded sports panellists who are not actually that qualified, but bring in the views with their good looks (which is what really matters).
This project was a simple process of gathering research of current news, writing the script and incorporating the research, using Zoom to record talking heads and finally editing around the footage to create a sports/news report show in a digital podcast-like format. Initially, the idea was to focus on Tokyo 2020 and essentially replace the different events with news but evolved into a sports report show, departing from the restrictions of just focusing on one topic.
Throughout the making of this comedy news piece, the group found ways to adapt in difficult circumstances when trying to create a piece while separated in our homes. This strengthened our own creative processes as well as our group process in making media together. Incorporating news research through footage and graphics highlighted to us how humour can be made through the satirisation of the current news. Even though this studio was experienced online, we still were able to acquire experience and glimpses on how comedy new shows are created and how continuous the writing can be as we try to keep up with the news. News satire can be a powerful tool to create a discussion about important topics and also be an effective form of comedy. Another aspect the group got out of this studio and the creation of this piece was efficiency and time management as the group was able to finish parts of the piece in line with a schedule, providing us with the time to gather feedback and make adjustments to produce the most finished piece as possible. Ultimately, due to the online experience of the studio, it surprisingly blended well with the studio; learning about more conventional styles of comedy news shows whilst exploring how we can take advantage of our digital space.
