NATALIE STEWART

All too quickly my second semester of university, and my first ever studio, have come to an end. I really was not expecting such an amazing experience from my first studio class, but my expectations have been happily exceeded, and I’m genuinely sad that it’s now over.

Firstly, I have never learned as much about the subject of media as I have in Robin’s class. Not only had I no idea what a focus puller even was until this course, neither did I know about the concept of decoupage, the effects of blocking, lighting, the 180 degree line (to break or not to break, that is the question) and so on. My only criticism is that the semester wasn’t a few weeks longer, so I could have had more time exploring even more technical aspects of filmmaking.

I can’t believe just how far we’ve come in such a short time. To think that lesson one began with the simple task of setting up a camera, and that everyone was struggling, really shows me that I’ve learned much more than I even thought. It’s been quite a journey.

Everyone was so supportive and creative, and so much fun to hang out with twice a week for the past few months. I’m really thankful to them for making class so much fun.

My favourite part of this studio was how practical it was. I don’t think a single lesson went by where we didn’t go out and film one exercise or another, or gather around as a class and figure out the best way to film the scene together.

Lastly, I want to thank Robin again, even though he probably believes he’s been thanked way too much in these last few weeks (though he really can’t be thanked enough), for being an amazing and inspiring tutor. It has been such a pleasure learning from him, and I’m very sad to say goodbye. Overall the course, my fellow students and Robin have all been fantastic and I couldn’t be happier with my experience in The Scene in Cinema!
