This semester, I have found The Scene in Cinema to be an engaging and eye-opening studio to be a part of. Although I had studied camera coverage and decoupage in media in high school, I had never looked at this study in so much depth before. Therefore, this studio was a really great learning experience for me personally, and I feel I have been able to take so much away from it that I can apply in my time at RMIT and media work following the degree. From the start of the semester, I knew little to nothing about the ins and outs of areas such as depth of field, aperture and rules such as ‘crossing the line’. This studio really made me realise how much more there was for me to learn about camera coverage, and therefore every class became enjoyable knowing I I’d always learn something I hadn’t yet known about before.

In the first few weeks of the semester where we learnt about using the cameras and all the settings on them, I was at first intimidated as I had never used cameras like those before, and definitely not in such a manual mode. However, I now feel confident using these, and overall more confident with all cameras in general. One thing I really enjoyed from our classes this semester were the exercises we completed almost every class. I found that through doing these each week not only was I able to rotate roles and apply my understanding of class concepts to actual production work, but I also found that I was able to make friends with everyone else in the class and in addition we were able to learn from each others skills and knowledge.

Lastly, I thoroughly enjoyed having Robin as my tutor for The Scene in Cinema. Having a tutor who is so passionate about what he is teaching us and who genuinely cares about not only the class work, but what we as students learn from it and how we apply it to our own work, really makes a difference to our experience of the class. Therefore, having Robin as our tutor really had a positive impact on what was overall a really great semester.
