Reflection:

For what I learned about ‘noticing’ through this project, I firmly believe that ‘noticing’ should be something that we intentionally do in the beginning. However, after finishing this project, I found that ‘noticing’ actually could be something that just happened. It could be something we intentionally do, but it doesn’t have to be, just like how I found out the airplane in the first time, accidentally in a chance. What I filmed for this project is just something really happened in my life, though it just a tiny thing that happened in my life, not often and not obvious, but truly happened.

For the three key learning outcomes in this semester, the first one that I want to talk about is cinemagraph, I think cinemagraph is really a good way to make the interaction and make the audience focus on what I want them to focus on the frame, it is also a way to make a tiny thing become obvious. The second one is the feedback that I got in this time and last time’s project. I think the best way to illustrate a nonfiction video is to use the actual sound that happened when recording because what nonfiction need is the truth, the reality. Though the music might help to fill the emptiness of the video, I think the actual sound of the video will still be the best choice for a nonfiction video. The last learning outcome that I want to talk about is what we did in week 9’s workshop. In my opinion, I think the way of brainstorming that Hannah taught us is really helpful. By figuring out the biggest thing, the big things and the small things, my mind becomes more purposeful and clear, as well as my plan.

The airplanes could be obviously seen by using eyes, however, they are not that obvious through the frame. Hence, sometimes I could not find the airplane when I was editing the footages that I filmed and I need to ‘notice’ again. For some clips, I need to spend a few minutes to look for the airplanes because they are too hard to be seen. For what I could do better for my project work, I think it will be better if some of the videos could have less shaky frames, I might try to use a tripod to film next time for the cinemagraph.

The bottom half of the video is still photo and the top half of the video is moving, by using this kind of way to make the audience put more attention on the sky and make them more focusing on what I want them to notice. Besides, the quality of the video is not that high because I used my phone to filmed all the footages, and the low quality made the airplane less obvious. Moreover, the actual sound of the video works really well, the noisy sound of the city make the video have more interaction.

I was also doing the ‘encounter’ in last time’s project, however, the feeling of ‘encounter’ that I felt this time have a big difference from last time. Last time I was doing ‘people and nature’ encounter, and when I tried to film some footages, I needed to respond quickly to people’s movements, because people’s behaviors are always unpredictable. While this time, I was doing ‘airplanes and sky’ encounter, I knew what would happened in the next moment as I saw the airplane.

Still, filming beautiful scenes will always be my first choice, because when I was filming those scenes, I feel happy, and when I show those video to other people, they also feel happy. I feel happy because I have the scenes that I like, the audience feel happy because they enjoy watching those beautiful scenes or even touched by those scenes, and I feel happier when the audience enjoy watching the videos that I make. That is the reason why I chose media, that is the reason why I like filming. To find more, to notice more, to film more, that is what I want to do in my media studies in the future.
