Underground
For assignment 4, we focused our investigation on the sonic possibilities and aspects of our site. We found the most common sonic occurrence was the echo, and we wanted to express that in our audit of the site. We played several different styles of music and ambient sounds through a huge PA speaker. We pointed the speaker towards different surfaces and tried to reveal its natural acoustics. We also interacted with elements of the site when sound was being recorded. We used pieces of wood on steel pipes and frames and experimented with various percussive techniques. The sonic nature of the site is such that it seemed to absorb and rearrange sounds with a strange and subtle beauty.
