Memorial

For our final piece we decided to explore further the idea of memorial and commemoration. We came to this idea through the prompt that a place means nothing without emotion. Thus we considered that a place of memorial or a place that is dedicated to a person’s existence must be charged with emotion. For a first exploration we looked at the Holocaust Center in Elsternwick, but decided we needed to explore another place for our second piece, that being the WW2 cemetery and memorial at the Springvale cemetery. There we captured the many facets that made the place up. The memorial plaques and the cemetery itself, we gathered that there was something very religious about the place which added to its sense of sacredness. Our feelings and emotions were also affected whilst there, from feeling uneasy within the cemetery to also feeling a sense of piece as it was beautifully set up with flowers everywhere.
