Studio 5 was going to critique all the submitted short films. This was going to be done in small groups per table, partly to get through all the work, and to develop understandings of each other. As there were few there at 8:30 instead we looked, as a whole class, at the work of those who were there on time, with feedback being completed by everyone.
It is a basic tenet of studio practice that a) work in progress is shared b) critiqued, c) for it be then improved. This happened today in terms of the common problems that we saw across many of the first films. This studio also wants to apply these ideas to theory, and writing, and your ongoing projects.
Things to think about:
- what matters to the camera? why? how can I use this to advantage?
- what matters to the frame? why? how can I use this to advantage?
- f I treat my images as more abstract and not ‘telling a story’ then what is editing? is it composing (like music), making rhythms? Is it also visual rhythms (like painting), and also of cadence (pace)? How can I use this to advantage? (What do I need to notice in the image to be able to do this?)
i
So what happens when I treat images as things in themselves, what do they care for and about?
The plan today had been to critique the films (at most 50 minutes), then form groups as the first soundscape is due in 9 days. With 40% of the class missing forming groups was always going to fail, so that’s been deferred to Thursday (so there will be 7 days for the next assignment). I can’t stress strongly enough that things happen in the studios and this is the only time action will be deferred because someone is missing.
On Thursday we will complete a task that identifies your capacities which will help you manage your contribution to the group projects. Groups will be formed. We will discuss Bogost. I want you then spend the time working out all that you need to know to do the task, how much of this you already know, what you don’t know and needs to be found out, and who and how this will be found out.
