A film image does not mean by what it is in itself but by what relations it is placed within and amongst. Next, if we take out ‘film image’ and substitute it with ‘things’ we get “a thing does not mean by what it is in itself but by what relations it is placed within and amongst”, and finally, if we substitute “mean” with “is” we get:

A thing is not something in itself but is only that thing because of the relations it is placed within and amongst.
