Copyright & Creative Commons

Some good discussion came up in the workshops last week about the complications that arise around the issues of copyright online.  Some good perspective is offered in this article from Artslaw about Australia’s stance on the issue.

By now we should all have an understanding of what Creative Commons is, and how it is applicable to the work we’re creating on our blogs.

In the video interview with Lawrence Lessig on Creative Commons, Lessig discusses the ‘remix or participatory culture’ that we’re part of, and how Copyright is too restrictive;  it doesn’t allow for the breadth of preference on the internet which he suggests is ‘not constrained by commercial interests’.

The videoWhy Creative Commons happened mentions how CC was designed to ‘skip the intermediaries’ .  This is a good insight into the attitudes within ‘internet culture’; an culture that is founded on the idea of collaboration and sharing of ideas.

for further information, RMIT’s copyright services is a great resource to look into this issue more deeply from a student point of view.
