Group Discussion Question: Online identity
In this course you will be developing your online identity, which shapes how you are represented across various online platforms. What do you hope to gain from this? What challenges do you think you might face?
Exercise
To prepare ourselves for the course, there are some fundamental things we need to do. Some of you may find these tasks very quick and easy, others may take a while, but please follow them carefully as they will be vital to your learning and assessment throughout the course.
During (and after) this workshop you should have completed:
- Assessment Google Doc shared with your tutor
- Created your blog
- Created a post on your blog
- Chosen a custom theme
- Created a page on your blog linking to the RMIT assessment declaration
- More blog posts!
Some of these steps will make up part of your blog checklist the be completed in class week 3, so be sure to be thorough.
Please see further detail on these tasks, click the link below:
- Assessment Google Doc
- In your Google Drive, create a new folder for this course. Be sure to give it an appropriate name, i.e ‘Networked Media’ or ‘NetMed2016’, not Untitled Folder. This is the folder where you can store any relevant course material.
- In that folder, create a new Google Doc and name it with your details: ‘lastname_firstname_studentnumber’. This is the Google Doc that you will submit links to your assessment tasks into.
- Copy and paste the declaration and headings below into your Google Doc. Your assessment tasks will not be marked unless you have done this step:

I declare that in submitting all work for this assessment I have read, understood and agree to the content and expectations of the assessment declaration

Once you have completed this, click ‘Share’ (top right of screen) to share it with your tutor and check that they have received it.
2. Blog setup
Throughout this course you will sign up to several different sites and platforms. Firstly, you need to decide how you want to manage your logins – if you want to use your RMIT email address or a personal email address.
Your RMIT address will be fine most of the time, but may not work for some platforms (such as Youtube). It is recommended that you use your RMIT address to keep things simple, but you may need to use another at some point.
You should also pick a general username and password, that is different to your RMIT password (as your RMIT password needs to be changed regularly). A good standard username is your firstnamelastname, but again the choice is yours.
- Now go to https://wordpress.com/ and create your blog! (Create Blog, not Create Website)
From the start, you will be asked to make some decisions about what your blog is. Don’t worry too much about these, but you should consider your blog title carefully.
Once you have created your blog, and are busy exploring, complete the following tasks:
- Create a post that links to the student charter: http://www1.rmit.edu.au/staff/studentadmin/studentcharter, describe how this is relevant to your blog and publish it
- Choose a custom theme for your blog (i.e not the default WordPress theme)
- Create a page (not a post) with a link to RMIT’s Assessment Declaration (http://www1.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment/declaration) and briefly discuss how you think this will effect the way you use your blog. You may need to add this page to a ‘menu’ to see it on your blog page, depending on the theme you have chosen for your blog
Once you have completed all of the above, continue to explore your blog dashboard, and keep posting. If you’re having trouble, ask your tutor, or check out the WordPress support (https://wordpress.org/support/) which is generally very helpful.
3. Suggested blog entries:
- Write a post that reflects on key points you took from the reading
- Write a post that summarises some good points that came out of your discussion in the workshop
- Write a list of things that you would like to do to personalise your blog. You should look at other blogs in your area of interest for ideas
