Radio’s New Wave has been a pretty steep learning curve for me. I’ve met and interviewed some very strange and interesting people – old men stuck in a delusion of British colonialism; mothers and sons cackling over some in-joke; suspicious tourists. People have been kind and stand-offish, enthusiastic and shy, and overwhelmingly confused by why I want to shove a microphone in their face and demand their opinion. It’s taught me a lot about how deceptively easy radio seems. Removing the visual component doesn’t necessarily make what you’re doing easier, halving the work. There’s a whole new set of challenges and opportunities and it’s been exciting to experience them through this studio.
