The biggest thing I’ve learnt in this course is the incredible amount of thought, planning and effort it takes to make a really great radio piece. Technically, I’ve learnt how to use microphones and recorders and editing software. I’ve learnt not to accidently turn the recorder off midway through an interview. Then there’s interviewing itself: getting someone to talk openly and interestingly about themselves is hard, but can also be really rewarding. And of course, there’s the hours and hours of editing, obsessing over every detail, one second at a time (literally!), trying to make something that’s clean and professional and sonically interesting. Thank goodness Kyla showed us so many subtle, hauntingly beautiful pieces to remind us that great radio is possible – it just takes a lot of work.
