Since the start of the twenty-first century, the global film industry has undergone substantial change. These changes are largely, but not solely, attributable to the precipitous rise of digital film technologies which have affected production, as well as the advancement of online technologies, which have opened up new avenues for distribution.
The Australian film industry has had to adapt quickly to these changes, which have simultaneously posed a threat to pre existing business structures, while offering savvy practitioners the opportunity to capitalise on emergent ones.
This report will examine the key factors which are shaping the short term trends within the Australian film industry across four main areas:
- Technological changes in the Australian Feature Film industry
- Funding of Australian Films
- Distribution of Australian Films
- Narrative trends in Australian Films
Examining how changes in one of these areas affects another is vital, as it enables one to build up a comprehensive picture of the relationship between the different sections of the industry. For example, do certain filmmaking technologies encourage the production of certain types (i.e. genres) of films, which are better suited to particular modes of distribution (e.g. Video-on-Demand, rather than a theatrical release)? Much of these discussions take place in the section covering narrative trends in Australian films.
It is hoped that this report will provide a well-rounded insight to budding filmmakers, as well as those with a general interest in the Australian feature film industry.
