This is a blog post by a PhD student of mine, Hannah Brasier. Maya Deren (for example Meshes of the Afternoon) was a dancer who moved into experimental cinema. I like the quote because last week we talked about the ways in which repetition (for instance via incantation) makes things concrete. So here the claim is that ritual takes the person out of it, if you like the person must become utterly subject to someone else, and in doing this becomes part of larger patterns and structures.
